Gray Sky Event: Australia Floods
Towards the end of 2022, the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Ellie brought multiple days of rain and high winds to South Australia. The heavy rainfall caused rivers to swell and flood, such as the Fitzroy River. While seasonal rains are expected, this particular storm caused catastrophic rainfall totals from 8″ to nearly 20″ (200 to 500 millimeters) in just a week’s time. The result was massive flooding that isolated communities and made bridges impassable.
Our Gray Sky team had been monitoring the situation closely, connecting with our GIC members in Australia, and then working with them to determine the best course of action to capture the hardest hit areas. A plan was put into place and our planes got up into the air on January 13 to collect multiple areas impacted by this massive flooding.
Below is a gallery of Oblique and Ortho imagery that highlights just some of the areas we captured such as the Mannum, Punyelroo, Blanchetown, Renmark, and near the Murray Bridge.
