PixelHack 2022

Developers and Geo Geeks: We invite you to push the limits in aerial imagery and analytics in our PixelHack.

Watch Video

Let’s PixelHack Australia!

We are opening up access to all our data in Australia so developers and geo geeks like you can unleash their creativity and find new ways to innovate and build against Vexcel’s vast library of aerial imagery and data. Solving real-word challenges demands accurate, consistent data. How will you innovate and take on challenges of today or the future?

  • Maybe you’ll find new property attributes by analyzing our oblique imagery.
  • Maybe you’ll discover a new way to prevent bushfires by deep-learning against our color-infrared imagery?
  • Maybe you discover new insights with our elevation data to better predict flood patterns?
  • How would you design the cities of the future?
  • How can insights from accurate imagery save lives?
  • How could you apply ML or AI to large library of oblique imagery?

The possibilities are endless. Whatever it is, we challenge you to find new, interesting insights. The only limits to this hackfest are the limits you place upon yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up?

Registrations are now closed.

We’ll review your application and our customer advocates will set your accounts.

Who can participate in the HackFest?

Students. Professionals. Non-profits. For-profits. Anyone. There are no restrictions regarding background or experience. Hackers must agree to contest rules, TOU, and EULAs.

What kind of aerial imagery and data is available to hackers?

Registrants get access our aerial imagery and geospatial data library in Australia. This includes current and historic imagery of the following types of content:

  • Oblique imagery – see a property from all sides and in high-resolution (7.5cm)
  • True Ortho imagery – get a top-down view with no shifts, seamlines, or building lean
  • Multispectral imagery – easily detect vegetation and impervious surfaces with our color-infrared (CIR) data
  • Elevate – use Digital Surface Model (DSM)
  • Property Attributes – access to select property and building attributes, including footprints.

We also have imagery from a few disaster events, such as the 2020 bushfires.

What is the challenge?

The challenge revolves around using highly accurate aerial imagery and geospatial data to solve real world problems. What could you design if given access to a robust library of aerial content? Would you develop the next great smart cities of the future? Or would you identify environmental challenges and use aerial data to support your project ideas? Whatever you can imagine doing or creating is completely open for this hackfest–there are no limits.

How will hacks be judged?

Submit a video of your PixelHack by May 16. (Watch this website for directions on how to submit your hack). Judges will pick the finalists who will then pitch their hack–either in person or virtually–at Locate22. Judges will then announce the winners during the last day of Locate22. All entries will be judged by the PixelHack Competition Judging Panel against the following criteria: technology, design, use of imagery and data (originality, creativity), inspiration, and overall score. Category winners will be announced on May 26, 2022.

When are finalists picked?

Finalists for the judged portion of the competition will be notified by May 17 to get ready to prepare for virtual or in-person pitches beginning May 24, at Locate 22.

How do finalists pitch their hack at Locate 2022?

Finalists are encouraged to be creative in their presentation styles. Whether you want to pitch using a PowerPoint presentation, 3D models, a demo, or visual boards, the style is open to you.

Where and when are winners announced?

Winners of the PixelHack 22 will be announced during the closing session of Locate22 on May 26, 2022. Prizes will be awarded either in person or shipped to anyone attending virtually.

When’s the deadline to submit my hack?

Submissions are closed for PixelHack.

You have until May 18 to create, design, plan, dream, and show off your ideas for PixelHack 22. Participates will be asked to submit a video (no longer than 5 minutes) of their PixelHack.

How do I get help accessing imagery and data?

If you have questions on how to access the imagery, please connect with our Hack Support Team at support@vexcelgroup.com.
